The Fabric Tech Series: Smarter Materials for Better Products

If you've been following Fazane Fox Production Agency on LinkedIn or Instagram, you may have noticed I've become a bit of a fabric geek.

Actually, "a bit" might be underselling it.

I've been sharing our Fabric Tech Series over there: short introductions to some of the clever materials and textile technologies we're discovering through our sourcing and product development work.

But social media moves quickly, and these materials deserve more than 30 seconds before disappearing into the algorithm abyss.

So I'm bringing them together here in batches of three.

More importantly, I want to explain why founders developing new products should care about them.

Because fabric shouldn't be something you think about once your product has been designed.

For technical, functional, medical, wellness and performance products in particular, the material can be fundamental to how the product works.

The right textile can help manage moisture, support sensitive skin, regulate temperature, improve comfort, reduce odour, provide protection or completely change the experience of using a product.

And sometimes, the material itself can become part of your competitive advantage.

So, let's geek out.

EPISODE 1: SeaCell™

The fabric made with seaweed

Yes. Seaweed.

SeaCell™ is a fibre made using seaweed and cellulose and can be blended with fibres such as cotton to create beautifully soft fabrics with some particularly interesting properties.

It's designed with skin comfort and wellbeing in mind, which is where things start getting interesting from a product-development perspective.

Rather than choosing a fabric simply because it feels nice or has the right weight, you're beginning to ask:

What could this material actually contribute to the product?

SeaCell™ is associated with properties including skin-friendly comfort, breathability and moisture management, with the seaweed component being central to its wellbeing proposition.

Where could we use it?

For a founder developing a product, this could make SeaCell™ interesting for areas such as:

  • Skin-focused wellness products
  • Next-to-skin garments
  • Recovery and comfort products
  • Performance clothing
  • Sensory or comfort-led products
  • Premium everyday essentials

The point isn't that every wellness product suddenly needs to contain seaweed.

It's that materials like this allow us to start thinking about fabric as functionality rather than decoration.

And that's a very different way to develop a product.

EPISODE 2: Smartcel™ Sensitive

When your fabric needs to be particularly kind to skin

Next up is Smartcel™ Sensitive, a Lyocell-based fibre technology developed specifically with sensitive skin in mind.

This is where textile development starts moving even further away from "What colour shall we make it?" and towards "What does the person using this product actually need?"

Smartcel™ Sensitive combines the softness and moisture-management properties associated with Lyocell with additional functionality designed around skin comfort and protection.

Depending on the specific fibre and fabric construction, this technology can offer properties including:

  • Antibacterial functionality
  • Skin-soothing properties
  • Moisture management
  • Softness and comfort
  • UVA and UVB protection

Where could we use it?

Immediately, you can start imagining applications beyond conventional fashion:

  • Medical and wellness products
  • Products designed for sensitive skin
  • Comfort and recovery garments
  • Sensory-friendly products
  • Next-to-skin products
  • Performance garments where comfort and protection matter

And this is exactly why we spend so much time researching materials at Fazane Fox Production Agency.

If a client comes to us saying:

"I'm developing a product for someone with sensitive skin…"

we don't want the conversation to begin and end with:

"Let's find you a soft fabric."

We want to explore whether the material itself could help us solve more of the problem.

EPISODE 3: Lyocell Mix

Sometimes the clever choice isn't the flashy one

Lyocell might not sound quite as exciting as "fabric made from seaweed", but don't underestimate it.

Lyocell is a man-made cellulosic fibre generally produced from wood pulp, and it's become an incredibly useful material for products where softness, breathability and moisture management matter.

Depending on the blend and construction, Lyocell fabrics can offer:

  • Excellent moisture absorption
  • Breathability
  • Softness against the skin
  • Good comfort properties
  • Odour-management benefits
  • A smooth handle suitable for sensitive or next-to-skin applications

And because it can be blended with other fibres, we can adjust the fabric depending on what the finished product actually needs to achieve.

Where could we use it?

Lyocell blends can be particularly useful for:

  • Medical and wellness products
  • Sensitive-skin applications
  • Underwear and next-to-skin garments
  • Active and performance products
  • Sensory-friendly clothing
  • Comfortable everyday essentials

Again, the interesting part isn't simply knowing that Lyocell exists.

It's understanding when and why we might use it.

So, Could Your Fabric Be Doing More?

That's really the question behind this entire series.

When someone approaches us with a new product idea, we're not only thinking about how we're going to manufacture it.

We're thinking about what the product needs to do.

Who is using it?

What problem are we trying to solve?

What does it need to feel like?

Does it need to manage moisture?

Protect the skin?

Stretch?

Recover?

Regulate temperature?

Reduce odour?

Survive repeated washing?

And only then should we be asking:

What material can help us achieve that?

For founders developing technical, functional, medical, wellness or fabric-based products, getting those decisions right early can have a huge impact on the finished product.

Because a clever idea paired with the wrong material is still the wrong product.

Have an idea for a product that needs to do something clever?

This is exactly the kind of work we love at Fazane Fox Production Agency.

We help purpose-driven founders turn technical, functional and fabric-based ideas into commercially viable products.....from early-stage product development and material research through to sourcing, sampling and production.

So if you've got an idea scribbled in a notebook, a prototype that isn't quite working, or a product where you know what you want it to do but have absolutely no idea what it needs to be made from, come and talk to us.

We can help you figure out the fabric-shaped bit.

And hopefully avoid a few factory-shaped headaches along the way.

Much Love as always
