Why a Product Development Consultation Is Not “Just a Call”

Why responsible product development starts with questions, not guesswork.

One of the most common questions we receive from new founders is:

“Can you give me an approximate cost before I pay for a consultation if my collection isn't fully developed yet?”

It is a completely understandable question.

Nobody wants to commit money without knowing whether a project is likely to fit their budget. Equally, no responsible product development agency can accurately price an undeveloped product or collection without first understanding what is actually being made.

That is precisely why our consultation exists.

It is not a sales call. It is not an informal conversation before the real work begins. It is the first stage of the real work.

A Product Description Is Not Enough to Create a Meaningful Quote

Imagine being asked to estimate the development and production cost of a twelve-style premium womenswear collection.

The collection may include ready-to-wear separates, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. There may be hand sketches and exploratory AI-generated images, but no approved designs, technical specifications, confirmed fabrics or construction details.

At this stage, how much should the collection cost?

The honest answer is that nobody can responsibly know.

A simple slip dress and a fully structured evening gown may both be described as “a dress”, but they are entirely different products.

One may require relatively straightforward pattern cutting, lining and construction. The other may involve internal corsetry, boning and support structures, draping, complex pattern cutting, hand-applied embellishment, specialist linings, multiple fittings and skilled hand finishing.

Those differences affect almost every part of the project, including design development, technical documentation, pattern cutting, sampling, manufacturing time, quality control and final production cost.

Providing a broad estimate without understanding those details would be little more than guesswork. Guesswork is not a useful foundation for a commercial product.

Why We Need to Understand the Budget

A product cannot be developed properly in isolation from its budget.

The available budget affects the number of styles in the first collection, product complexity, fabric and trim selection, manufacturing location, production quantities, sampling requirements, specialist finishes, launch timelines, freight, duties and final delivery.

This is why we ask founders to share their intended development budget, production budget and target make prices.

It is not because we want to spend whatever budget is available. It is because we need to know whether the proposed product can realistically be developed and manufactured within those commercial parameters.

A founder may want a heavily embellished gown manufactured in a quantity of 25 pieces while also working towards a low target make price. That combination may not be commercially achievable.

The role of the consultation is to identify that mismatch early and explore alternatives. These might include simplifying the construction, adjusting the fabric, increasing the quantity, changing the manufacturing route, reducing the number of launch styles or introducing the collection in phases.

Why Indicative Prices Can Only Go So Far

We publish indicative pricing for many of our core services in our FAQs and Services pages. These figures are intended to help founders understand our general pricing structure before approaching us.

However, indicative prices cannot provide a complete project quotation.

Every product has different requirements. Even within one collection, one style may need relatively light design refinement while another requires significant technical development, specialist pattern cutting and several sampling rounds.

Production costs also cannot usually be confirmed until we have sufficient information to assess the garment properly, including approved designs, technical drawings, measurement specifications, construction details, fabric and trim requirements, finishing techniques, quantities and delivery requirements.

We can often provide an initial commercial indication and develop towards an agreed budget, but final prices must be based on something more substantial than a mood board or product category.

What Happens During a Consultation?

Our Consultation & Quotation Session is a structured strategic, technical and commercial product-planning session.

It is designed to move a project from an idea or early concept towards a clear and practical development route.

Depending on the project and the information available, we typically cover strategic product direction, design and collection review, technical and fabric considerations, commercial viability, product architecture, realistic costing and feasibility, production quantities and minimum order requirements, manufacturing strategy, risks, timelines and clear next steps.

Where appropriate, we review sketches, reference products, samples, mood boards, AI concepts or existing technical files in advance. An NDA can also be arranged where confidential designs or commercially sensitive information need to be shared.

The objective is not simply to talk about the idea. The objective is to begin making informed decisions about how the product can actually be developed, manufactured and brought to market.

The Consultation May Change the Original Plan

Sometimes a consultation confirms that the founder’s original plan is commercially and technically sound. Sometimes it reveals that changes are needed.

The original plan may involve too many styles for the available budget, production quantities below suitable factory minimums, an unrealistic launch date, a target make price that does not reflect the desired quality, unsuitable materials, overly complex construction or a manufacturing country that is not suited to the quantities or techniques required.

This is not a failure. It is valuable information.

A successful consultation may result in a more focused launch collection, a phased development plan, revised materials, adjusted quantities or a different production strategy.

The aim is not to preserve the original idea at any cost. The aim is to create a product plan that has a realistic chance of succeeding.

Why We Charge for Consultations

The consultation draws on years of technical, commercial and manufacturing experience.

It may require reviewing designs, assessing construction, considering manufacturing routes, identifying risks, discussing costs and developing a strategic roadmap. That is skilled professional work.

At Fazane Fox Production Agency, our Consultation & Quotation Session is charged at £250 plus VAT. Payment is made in advance.

If the project progresses into production with us the consultation fee is credited against the production invoice.

If the client decides not to proceed, they still retain the professional guidance, commercial clarity and practical roadmap developed during the session.

The value is not simply access to a call. The value is avoiding poor decisions before they become expensive ones.

A Consultation Can Save Far More Than It Costs

Developing a product without sufficient planning can lead to unsuitable samples, repeated redesign work, incorrect fabrics, missed factory minimums, unachievable cost targets, production delays, failed quality standards and launch dates that continually move.

A consultation cannot eliminate every risk. Product development will always involve testing, refinement and commercial decision-making.

But it can identify obvious risks before significant money is committed. It can also ensure that everyone begins the project with a shared understanding of the product, the budget, the responsibilities and the route ahead.

The First Question Should Not Be “How Much?”

Cost matters. It should always be discussed openly and early.

But before asking what a product will cost, we first need to establish: What are we actually developing?

Only then can we begin to answer: What will it take to make it properly?

A responsible quotation is the outcome of understanding the product. It cannot replace that understanding.

A good consultation does not delay development. It creates the foundation for it.

Because successful products are not improvised. They are engineered, planned and built with intention.
